What should I do if I have an allergy?

  • Updated

If you have a food allergy or intolerance, or someone you’re ordering for has, please contact the restaurant directly before placing your order. You should be able to check whether the food you’ve selected is suitable.

However, if you’re unable to contact the restaurant, it’s best to cancel or not place your order.

You can find most restaurants’ phone numbers by clicking on the allergy warning just above the restaurant’s menu. If you’re using our website, this warning may appear on the right-hand side, in the Your order section.

Some of our Famous Restaurant Partners may not have a specific allergen phone number available. If this is the case, we’ll give you a link to their website where possible, so you can find the relevant allergen information.

Why can’t Just Eat guarantee that my meal is suitable for my allergies or intolerances?

We wish we could offer guarantees for customers with allergies and intolerances, but the restaurants themselves are responsible for preparing and cooking your food. If you want to make sure their food is suitable for your allergies or intolerances, they’re the best people to get in touch with. Also, the restaurants will be best able to answer your specific questions relating to ingredients and meal preparation – i.e., whether they use shared fryers and grills, which may mean that the food is not suitable for you.

Why should I have to contact the restaurant if I have a food allergy or intolerance? Why can’t Just Eat check?

We want to protect you and prevent putting your health at risk in any way. The only person who can tell you exactly what’s going into your food is the chef cooking it for you in the restaurant’s kitchen.

Even if we confirmed a restaurant’s menu was suitable for people with specific food allergies or intolerances, the restaurant could always change its ingredients at a later date. In such cases, we’d be giving you out-of-date information. We don't want to take that risk with your health.

How does Just Eat make sure allergen information is correct?

When a restaurant signs up with Just Eat, they have to give us their latest menu information. We then include this on their Just Eat page. We also ask them to notify us if any menu details change, and we make free allergen and food safety training available to our Restaurant Partners.

How do I get in touch with a restaurant?

If you click on the allergen warning on the restaurant’s menu page, you should see the restaurant’s phone number. It’s best to call the restaurant staff to ask allergen-related questions, as they’ll be the only people who can tell you exactly what's going into your meal.

Just so you know, allergen phone numbers may not be available for some of our Famous Restaurant Partners. If this is the case, please check the relevant allergen and dietary information pages on their websites.

Don’t food businesses legally have to provide information about certain allergens?

Our Restaurant Partners are legally required to provide allergen information in line with the 14 prescribed allergens under UK law.

Before ordering food, it's always a good idea to contact the restaurant to ask for food allergen information. We're always happy to give you the restaurant’s phone number so that you can call them directly.

Does Just Eat do anything to help restaurants comply with the law?

We work closely with the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and other industry authorities to help restaurants fully understand and fulfil their food safety obligations. We also advise our Restaurant Partners on how to provide the best customer service for those with food allergies and/or intolerances.

I have some other questions about food allergies, what can I do?

Before placing an order, we always recommend you contact the restaurant directly with your specific food allergy questions. After all, they’ll be preparing your meal in their very own kitchen, so they should have all the answers you need.
